The Tuppenny’s Awesome New Years Eve Party…

We are having a bit of a party for New Years Eve! But foolishly, we are letting those two idiots behind the quiz and their far more talented pal run it. We could regret it, but this three headed bearded party machine have promised us some good times and the best music from the last 6 decades or so.

I you have ever been to the quiz, you probably know what to expect…!

We will be open a little later than normal to see in 2019 with all our usual craft beer loveliness available, bubbles, cocktails and maybe some treats….

Events Food

A Special XTC Burger is on the cards

So, in late October, two of the core members of Swindons greatest ever band, XTC, unite on stage for the first time since 1982, and play a run of gigs at the Swindon Art Centre over the road.

As we seem to have been adopted as “The Meeting Place” by all the travelling XTC fans we thought, as well as opening on a Monday for them, we would offer a special new burger.

So, please welcome to the menu for a limited time….. the DEAR GOD burger….

Essentially two burgers in one, the Dear God is an absolute monster of a burger. A massive patty made with nothing more than Helen Browning’s 100% organic ground beef, with just a pinch of seasoning topped with a mound of oozy, juicy barbecue pulled pork, all in a seeded bun. Served with homemade slaw. Choose if you want it with cheese or bacon or both!. £12. (Add £1 for Each topping)

This will be available only when the TC & I shows are on – so get in early!

Deya Brewing Tap Take Over and HomeBrew Competition

Cheltenham based Deya Brewing are simply put, one of the biggest noises in UK craft brewing right now, winning numerous awards and critical acclaim for their soft, intense and hoppy beers and constantly occupying a top 5 position in the Untapped beer rating app brewery charts. Their focus on fresh, clean and intense flavours has won them a legion of beer drinking fans and has certainly gone down outrageously well when it has been on the bar at The Tuppenny.

On September 6th, Deya will be bringing 6 keg, 1 cask and some special cans of their beer for you thirsty hordes, and will be on hand to talk through them, outline how they make them and the stories behind them. Expect some of their regular favourites plus some rarities and special brews. But, this won’t just be your normal Meet the Brewer, because alongside we will be running a home brewing competition.

We always supply the beer, now its your turn. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is brew us a beer, and have the kahunas toput it into the completion.

To level the playing field slightly, we’re asking you to brew a pale ale. That’s it. It’s a pretty broad remit, but interpret the brief however you see fit. So be creative, go for flavours that you think will wow the judging panel. This judging panel will comprise of Will Twomey, head brewer at West Berkshire Brewery / Renegade who brews the Tuppenny’s core range of beers, Ruth Mitchell, one of the most respected beer sommeliers in the country, and of course Theo Freyne, head brewer at Deya Brewing.

The Winner will get a day with Will, brewing your winning beer, on WBB’s 100litre pilot kit, and have the prestige of seeing your beer on draught in your favourite local craft joint, Tupp HQ. Also a brewery tour for you and three mates with Theo at Deya, and a craft beer goodie bag. 2nd prize is a brewery tour for four at Deya and a craft beer goodie bag and 3rd prize is a craft beer goodie bag. Prizes will also be on offer for “best name” and “best artwork/label design”.

Your beer must be a pale ale and needs to be brewed from grain, so no cheapo malt extract brewing kits. It has to be an original recipe (no clone brews from a download), Any natural adjuncts can be used to add additional flavour to your beer.

2 bottles need to be submitted on or before the 5th of Sept to The Tuppenny. Please register your interest in the competition by emailing your details to and feel free to keep us updated with your progress by social media or email

Live Music Session #17 – The Birthday one with Tamsin Quin, Buswell, Jim Blair

So, how do we party on our first birthday? With some of our favourite musicians of course! So, on Thursday 23rd November we have curated a special night to celebrate turning one!

Headlining the night is folk-pop pixie Tamsin Quin, someone we have been meaning to get back in since she wowed at the Literature Festival, so it is a real pleasure to have her, and she will hopefully be clutching a host of new songs from her soon toe be released new album! Tamsin is an acoustic Folk/Blues songwriter and musician from South West England. With influences such as Laura Marling, Seth Lakeman and the Levellers, you’ll be in for a whirlwind of charismatic tale telling.

“A tiny package of blues, pop and folk rolled into one. This lady is great; it is as simple as that.” – Dave Franklin, Swindonian.

“Tamsin is infectious… in a really good way. Her song craft and performance is enough to make others raise their game.” – Keiran Moore, Sheer Music

Ably supporting are a pair of our favourite musical gents – Buswell and Jim Blair. Shaun Buswell is one half of the duo who accidentally invented the Bateswell Tart cocktail (try it, it is delicious). Shaun’s stock in trade is melodic indie folk-pop, often augmented by orchestral msucians. He is bound to have a few extra folks on stage with him, so don’t miss his set. Jim Blair is one of our lovely regulars and a superbly talented slide guitar player. Normally found as part of funky blues rock outfit Hip Route solo he still has a swagger.

There will be plenty of other treats and surprises too – don’t miss the night! Entry is free, music will be from around 8pm.

It’s Our Birthday!

We are one!

Who would have thought it that this little idea that germinated away in Jamie’s brain for so long, would actually work. But, work it has and we have reached that first milestone of 12 months open and have loved every minute of it (apart from the time the plumbing went wrong, or when the water got cut off during a very very busy bank holiday). It has been mental!

So, to celebrate we are having a bit of a weekend of it! We will be having live music from Tamsin Quin, Shaun Buswell (co-creator of the Bateswell Tart) and Jim Blair (who is almost as regular here as we are) on our actual birthday (Thursday 23rd). We follow this up with a bit of a “Super-Sunday” on 26th with the triple whammy of the Old Town Christmas Lights Switch-On, an early DJ set from Harki and the November installment of the frankly lunatic Music Quiz. See the other blogs and our social media for more details on these events, and for anything else we have planned!

So, in a year what have we achieved? Plenty, as it turns out! We have hosted a variety of events from the Swindon Literature Festival and the Old Town Sausage and Ale Trail to a beer school with the guys from West Berkshire Brewery / Renegade as well as a Tap Social Movement Tap Takeover . We will have hosted 17 live music sessions which featured 33 acts plus three sessions of the Swindon Shuffle music festival  that brought in another 14 performances. The Shuffle team have hosted 11 quizzes that have raised hundreds of pounds for charity and we had a Tryanuary promotion at the start of the year.

We also hit the road and went to Craft Beer Rising, The Beavertown Extravaganza and Bristol Craft Beer Festival. All in the name of research of course! Oh and we have had has lots and lots of different beers (over 70 at the last count).

So, thank you for supporting us this year, we couldn’t do it without you. Enjoy the celebrations and we will see you for much much more of this over the next 12 months!
